Everyday household products that we take for granted could cause us more harm than good as these products are high in carcinogens, such as nitrobenzene, methylene chloride and formaldehyde.
It is important that we all know which household products are really harmful to our health and to either avoid them completely or at least limit our exposure to them and handle them with more care and caution.
Here are 7 household products we should be weary of;
1. Your Regular Shampoos
Using DIY homemade shampoos with natural ingredients are a lot safer than your regular shampoos that are highly toxic in nature because of their chemical components.
2. Beware Of Candles
A study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) discovered that about 40 % of candles sold on the market, particularly the scented ones, have their wicks made of lead wires to make them firmer.
It is believed that this lead is emitted from the candles when lit and the amount of lead released in the atmosphere is five times more than the permissible levels allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pollution standards for outdoor air.
This lead is responsible for numerous health issues such as; hormone disruption, learning disabilities and behavioral issues in children.  Using beeswax candles with cotton wicks is much safer.
3. Your Regular Air Fresheners
Air fresheners are full of carcinogenic as well as volatile organic compounds and toxins, such as phthalate esters.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) carried out a study on about 13 regular household air fresheners. It found that most of the air fresheners had chemicals that could be detrimental to the reproductive organs and may also further worsen patients with asthma problems.
In 2008, a study conducted by Anne Steinemann of the University of Washington indicated that all air-fresheners emitted carcinogens and toxic chemicals.
It is advisable to use essential oils as a form of natural fragrance rather than regular air fresheners. What is even more frightening is the fact that the harmful chemicals found in these air fresheners are not included on their labels nor Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
4. Pesticides And Insecticides
Those insecticides and pesticides you have at home contain carcinogenic chemicals which are extremely harmful to humans and animals as well. Some of the compounds found in your average pesticides and insecticides include carbamates, organophosphate and permethrin.
5. Your Shower Curtains
Yes! Your plastic shower curtains comprise of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and these compounds are released into the your shower, bath and the environment.
6. Your Art Supplies
It has been proven that those permanent magic markers, epoxy and rubber cement glues and solvents are made up of toxic chemicals responsible for organising damage, allergies and even cancer.
It is even more worrisome where children are concerned because of their higher metabolic rate and their still developing immune system. Make sure those markers are toxic-free when you buy them.
7. Your Antiperspirants Sprays
Those deodorant and antiperspirant sprays in your home comprise of carcinogenic compounds that can be absorbed through your skin as the product stays on your skin for long hours daily.
These compounds are responsible for numerous health problems, to avoid this you can try making your own natural homemade deodorant.
Finally, try limiting your exposure to these products as much as possible so as to reduce the amount of carcinogenic chemical compounds your body is exposed to daily for a much healthier and happier you.
