I am 30-year-old male. I recently had sex with my partner. But after having sex, I had red spots and rashes on my penis. Although this is not the first time I had sex with my partner. What could be the cause of it? Should I consult a doctor? Please help.
The query is answered by Dr Rajan Bhosale, Honorary Professor & HOD, Department of sexual medicine, KEM hospital & G.S.Medical College, Mumbai.
According to Dr Bhosale, red spots on the penis can be caused due to various reasons such as an infection, lack of proper lubrication during sex, diabetes, lice infestation or allergies. Hence, it is important to consult a doctor and let him decide how to treat the condition, based on the cause.  As in some cases, a mere physical examination is sufficient to know the cause, while in some, a series of tests are recommended to diagnose the condition. Here are some of the common causes of red spots on the penis.
Infections: It is mainly sexually transmitted infections (STIs) which occurs only after having sex with someone who is suffering from the disease. It could be –
  • Trichomonalis vaginalis – It manifests as red spots on the penis, which can be diagnosed with physical examination and treated with a single dose of medication.
  • Syphilis – In this, boils appear on the penis several days after having sex with a person suffering from the same.
  • Herpes – Caused due to herpes simplex virus type II of genital herpes, in which one or many red spots appear on the genital area.
Lack of lubrication: If it is not due to an underlying infection, then the lack of proper lubrication during intercourse can also cause skin abrasion and appearance of red spots on penis. It happens when the couple indulges in an intercourse in a hasty manner or when the woman is not ready for the act, thereby adequate lubrication is not achieved. This causes red spots or abrasion on the penis. Moreover, it will make the act more painful for the woman. Here is a woman’s guide to choosing the right lubricant to make sex more pleasurable.
Allergies: In rare cases, it could be due to an allergic reaction, which causes pain, burning sensation and itching of the penis. It can be an allergy to female secretion, allergy to public hair or lice manifestation in the pubic hair (pubic lice) or allergy to the latex condom.
