I am not talking about gestational diabetes, preeclampsia or other condition that people say overweight women can suffer from. I am not even talking about body shaming that is rampant duringpregnancy. I am overweight myself. But there are certain things that overweight women go through during pregnancy that they can’t confide in anyone. While we are overjoyed to be pregnant, but these things just ignite anxiety within us. If you are ‘fat’ like me you can relate to these things more easily:
1. The XXL size is not a comfortable size anymore. While most women say that they went from M to L or L to XL, only you know how much it pains as you see yourself getting uncomfortable in your XXL tees. Shopping is never going to be easy after this, getting your size would be a discovery in the mall.
2. Choosing a maternity bra or any bra for that matter is a disheartening experience. Yes, like your body your breasts are growing at a frenzied pace. And only you know that you have to settle for those clichéd black and white ones and say goodbye to the pinks and purples.
3. People who crib about back pain during pregnancy have no idea what it is to experience hip pains, thigh pains when the fat grips you from every side.
4. You don’t duck walk during your third trimester, you dinosaur walk. Yes, you walk like a dinosaur and you hate to invite those stares, but you are helpless.
5. The weighing machine at the doctor’s clinic is like a little terror waiting for you. You are damn scared every time you have to check your weight. But you do it anyway because there is no escape.
6. Yes, you don’t compromise on food it is not just for you but also for your baby that you have to eat. Giving in to your indulgence is the only time when you are happy and not thinking about your weight.
7. You secretly envy other mums who are slim despite their baby-bumps but smile at them anyway.
8. You loathe seeing the perfect mommy-magazines. You always feel like life might never go back to normal again (where normal means going back to your XXL size).
9. Breathlessness and fatigue are your best friends.
10. Your face, your face takes the entire toll of your weight and helplessness and when people ask you ‘Aren’t you happy you are pregnant?’ You almost want to break their head. Of course, you are happy; it doesn’t have to show on your face, always.
P.S: You might not feel the same way if you aren’t overweight like me and pregnant. But believe me, the joys of being a mother surpasses these little niggles. But you can’t help cribbing about being overweight.
